When was the last time you noticed how special the tree right outside your home truly is?

The natural world offers us infinite, miraculous beauty and much wisdom, just waiting for us to notice and appreciate.

And if you are looking for inner stillness, you can find it in glorious nature.  Disconnect from the noise, the people, the energetic busyness of your everyday life and tune into your natural surroundings using all your senses.  In this way, you can slow down, find breathing space and room to cultivate calmness and inner stillness.

Immerse yourself in nature as much as you can, everyday if possible.  Seek solitude for 20-30 minutes in a park or a forest, on a beach or a garden, whatever the season.  Just breathe, use all your senses to observe your experience… and just BE.  Still.  Peaceful.  Harmonious.

Maybe you’d like to try forest bathing, a beautiful Japanese mindfulness practice called shinrin-yoku. It’s quite easy. Simply immerse yourself in a forest, move slowly, pause often to breathe deeply and observe your surroundings using all your senses. Forest bathing invites quiet, intentional immersion—not high-energy hiking—just focused presence.

In every season, nature’s sights, sounds, scents, and textures invite stillness.

Notice the evolving colours: winter’s monochromatic palette of soft greys, spring’s fresh bright greens punctuated with flowers, summer’s lush hues, and fall’s gorgeous oranges, reds, and golds. Marvel at the sunny blue sky or the ever-changing shapes and movement of clouds.

The sounds also change with the season, as birds come and go, as the weather evolves, as the plants and trees come back into fullness or release their leaves.  Various birds and insects, the rustling of wind in the leaves and branches, the flow of water.

Notice the scents of nature, be it crispy cold or earthy.  Perhaps there’s an elusive floral scent or the freshness of new green leaves.

Reach out and feel the texture of tree bark, the softness of leaves and moss, the cool solidity of rocks.

Contemplate the wisdom that the trees and the forest quietly offer us, if we know how to look and listen, to hear their quiet truths.

I love that trees grow together in communities in their forests and woods, each tree is independent and unique and also invisibly connected through their roots to everything that surrounds them.

They thrive in the company of others. A tree standing alone is at risk to the elements. But together, communities of trees create their own ecosystem where they can store water, protect each other from heat, cold and wind. And every tree is valuable to the community.

They care for each other in times of need, sending nutrients to others via webs of interconnected roots and fungal networks.

Like us, they communicate through their senses, their sense of smell and taste, using taste to repel enemies, scent to attract friends and to warn fellow trees of invaders.

They clean the air and the soil of pollutants, making our environment healthier.

They have a sense of time, knowing just when to loosen their sap, to begin to bud or to let go of their leaves.

Trees move and grow very slowly.  But they can live for hundreds and even for thousands of years if left undisturbed. Resisting disease, insects, even fires. The only thing they can’t resist is a chain saw.

When a tree dies, its entire life history can be read in the rings of the trunks.  And it finally become a new ecosystem for the forest floor, if left undisturbed.

Trees have a lot to teach us!  We can take example from their sense of community and compassion. To me, trees reaching for the sky while rooting deeply into the earth stand for strength, steadiness, flexibility, comfort and wisdom, patience and perseverance.  And they can be a source of inspiration.

So the next time you feel the need for inner stillness, step outside, find a forest, a park or even one beautiful tree, stop and breathe and notice.   Stillness.  Peace.  Harmony.
