A beautiful way to cultivate both compassion and self-compassion is to connect with the deep wisdom and expansive sense of connection that can arise when we open to the energy of the crown chakra.
In many yogic and spiritual traditions, the chakras are the body’s energy centres, helping the mind, body, and spirit work together in harmony. Each chakra is connected with different organ systems and with different aspects of our physical, emotional, and spiritual lives. Chakra work helps us keep these energy centres open and balanced for greater overall well-being.
Both the heart chakra and the crown chakra can help us cultivate compassion. The energy of the heart chakra (Anahata) supports emotional and relational compassion — love, empathy, and connection with others and ourselves, often involving the giving and receiving of affection. This is a beautiful place to start if we want to use the chakras to deepen compassion. Learn more about the heart chakra HERE.
The crown chakra (Sahasrara) cultivates compassion by fostering a profound sense of interconnectedness and unity with all beings. It also helps us connect with nature, with the entire universe, and with the divine—whatever that means for you. This awareness encourages greater understanding, forgiveness, and love for humanity, shifting our focus from the self toward the collective. You might call this expansive compassion. The crown chakra also helps us access inner wisdom and spiritual perspective, bringing us greater clarity and awareness. This is where we will focus our work this week.
Your crown chakra is located at the top of your head, as though it were connecting you with the highest wisdom and energy available. It is called Sahasrara in Sanskrit, meaning “thousand-petaled,” and is also known as the Thousand-Petaled Lotus. This name symbolizes the vast and expansive nature of awareness, divine connection, and universal energy. It represents spiritual connection, higher consciousness, interconnectedness, and compassion without attachment.
When the energy of your crown chakra is open and balanced, you may feel deeply peaceful, serene, and fulfilled, with a strong sense of connectedness to all living beings and to your inner wisdom. And this is where compassion can deepen.
When it is out of balance, it may reflect a sense of disconnection from spirituality or from a higher purpose. You may feel aimless, judgmental, or less able to empathize with others. Some traditions also associate imbalance in this chakra with headaches, insomnia, brain fog, low mood, or difficulty concentrating.
Crown chakra practice is about working with expansive, spacious, non-physical energy. It can feel a bit floaty and unmoored if it isn’t integrated with the body and the Earth. For that reason, it’s helpful to pair it with practices that keep you grounded. For example, you might walk regularly in nature, eat wholesome and nourishing meals, or work with the root chakra which is your connection to Earth energy. Find more about root chakra practices HERE.
Here are 7 powerful ways to open and balance your crown chakra. They can be done separately or integrated into your yoga and meditation practice.

1. Visualize a lotus blossom: Meditation can be one of the most powerful and meaningful ways to connect with the energy of the crown chakra. A simple yet deeply effective practice is single-pointed focus meditation, which helps cultivate stillness, clarity, and concentration. This lotus visualization meditation is a beautiful way to use focused awareness to connect with the luminous, expansive presence you may find with the crown chakra.
2. Practice gentle inversions: Yoga in general is uniquely suited for the crown chakra because it prepares your body, mind, and energy to naturally open and receive this higher state of awareness. These poses are particularly helpful to activate the crown chakra.

3. Sit under the open sky: Cloud watching, stargazing, or simply looking up at the sky can feel especially nourishing for the crown chakra. Gazing at the vastness above us can evoke awe, humility, and a sense of connection to the infinite universe…and perhaps to a divine energy.
4. Chant the sound of the universe — OM: The mystical mantra OM is one of the most sacred and powerful of all Sanskrit mantras and this is the mantra associated with the crown chakra. OM is pure vibration, the primordial sound of the universe and connects us to universal vibration and energy. OM is the mantra to connect you to your higher self, to your true nature. And it doesn’t get much more expansive and divine than that!
5. Work with violet and white: Every chakra responds to specific vibrational frequencies, and colour is one of the most direct ways to shift those vibrations The crown chakra is unique because it is associated with two colours: violet (purple) and white. Violet represents high-frequency spiritual transformation and deep wisdom, while white embodies cosmic unity, absolute purity, and divine light. You could integrate these colours into your wardrobe, your home decor, your altar or your creative projects.
6. Use powerful crystals: Certain crystals are thought to support and balance the crown chakra, such as amethyst, labradorite and clear quartz crystal. Keep one or more of these on your altar, in your hand as you meditate or by your head during Savasana.
7. Read spiritual or philosophical texts: Beautiful writing, poetry, sacred texts, or teachings that expand your perspective can be very supportive for the crown chakra. This kind of reading nourishes contemplation and can gently lift awareness beyond everyday concerns.
