Let’s get back to our senses!

I mean it in a literal way…using mindfulness to harness the power of our 5 senses, as a way to stay grounded in the present moment, to find peace and calm.  As a way to live a much richer and more multidimensional life…it’s right there in front of us...available through our 5 senses.

Our senses are powerful vibrational forces. All 5 of our senses are interconnected and designed to work together.  They inform us of our place in the world, they guide us and connect us to everyone and everything in it.  If you think about it, you’ll realize that the most intense and memorable experiences in life involve all 5 of your senses:  sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste.

The key is the awareness…and staying fully present to your sensory experience.

How can we harness the power of our senses for our yoga and meditation practice?

And why should we even think about this in relation to our practice?  I can think of two very important reasons:

1) Makes your practice MEMORABLE AND PERSONAL - a sensory-based practice so will  inspire you to come back to your practice day after day.

2) Helps you STAY GROUNDED IN THE PRESENT MOMENT - awakening and paying attention to all five of your senses is a wonderful way to ground yourself in the present moment and to stay focused.

Your sanctuary is a wonderful place to begin practising awareness of your senses. Here are ideas to inspire you as you create your own personal sensorial sanctuary.

(Reminder, your sanctuary doesn’t have to be an entire room, it can be a corner of a room, even an outdoor deck, just somewhere that is dedicated to your practice where all your practice tools are ready and waiting for you.)

SIGHT
Everything you see in your practice space has the power to simulate your sense of sight and influence your sense of being.  Create your space with the intention of being peaceful, harmonious, joyful.  You can do that with…

  • Colours, patterns, images, light, movement
  • Beautiful artwork, photos of inspiring people or beautiful nature that give you a sense of peace
  • Messages to yourself or meaningful quotes
  • And of course with the Mandalas and Mantras of your HUM meditation cushion

HEARING
First, become aware of  the sounds of the room you are practicing, the sounds further away.  Just notice.  Then create your own personal soundscape to accompany and accentuate your practice with…
  • Sounds of nature
  • Gentle music
  • A singing bowl or chimes to begin or end your practice
  • Or practice "just listening"

SMELL
Intentionally heighten your sense of smell by diffusing specially selected essential oils, burning natural incense, lighting a scented candle, bringing a bouquet of fragrant flowers to your sanctuary.

TOUCH
Of course everything you touch is an opportunity to awaken your sense of touch.  Add some beautifully tactile pieces to your sanctuary - and really notice how they feel.  Notice…
  • How each prop or practice tool feels in your hand
  • The sticky, grippy surface of your yoga mat - how would you describe it?
  • The luxuriously soft feel of your meditation shawl
  • The cool sensation of your mala beads in your hand as you count your breaths or your mantras

TASTE
End your practice cup of your favourite tea, cool water with citrus and mint, spicy chai...and savour the complexity of the taste.
