Today is a great day to move some energy in your body and to make space for a blast of light-filled joy! Time to try Breath of Joy.  It’s a very powerful breathing technique (pranayama) that takes just 2-3 minutes to awaken your entire system, to get the energy flowing and to help you release any tension you may be holding onto.  It synchronizes movement with strong breathing. You can power up the practice with your intention - visualize letting go of everything that is blocking free-flowing energy on the exhalation, and visualize breathing in vibrant light on the inhalations, filling up completely.  Filling up with joy.

I guarantee you’ll have a smile on your face when you’re done!

For this technique you will need some space to move.  You can do it on your yoga mat or anywhere, with enough room to swing your arms out to the sides and up overhead.  Breath of Joy is done in 4 parts in rapid succession: a three-part inhale and then a great big exhale. Here’s how.

  • Stand with your feet together or hip width apart (whatever feels best) and with soft knees (slightly bent).  From here start the 4 part practice.
    1. Fill the lower third of your lungs as you swing your arms up and straight out in front of you.
    2. Fill the middle third of your lungs (still on the same inhale) and swing your arms out to the sides, as though you are opening your wings.
    3. Fill the top third of your lungs (again, the same inhale) and swing your arms forward then straight up overhead.
    4. Exhale completely with a loud HA sound as you swing your arms down and back, as you come into a standing squat.
      • Continue this in rapid succession for 2-3 minutes.
      • At the last inhale, hold your breath as long as it's comfortable, then release. And enjoy the free-flow of your breath and of the energy of your body.

So how do you feel? Connect to the energy of the practice and visualize yourself doing it when you need a pick-me-up, or to move some stagnant energy out to make room for all you desire.
